COMPANY HISTORY

1955 strongly shaped the face of German aviation.
On 29 July 1955 Theodor Wüllenkemper, who died in 2012, founded the company now known as WDL.
On 1 April 1955 Lufthansa performed its first scheduled flight since the end of the war. On 20 October 1955 LTU was founded as Lufttransport-Union (Air Transport Union) in Frankfurt/Main.

While Lufthansa predominantly operated scheduled flights, LTU covered charter flights to holiday destinations.

WDL started with only one biplane type ‘Tiger Moth’. Initially work and training flights were performed.

Theodor Wüllenkemper discovered the sky as advertising space very early on – first with banner planes and then with airships.

The sky as advertising space remains a unique selling proposition to this day.

During the past 60 years the company has been growing into an internationally operating group of companies.

‘Courage, determination and perseverance’
Theodor Wüllenkemper wrote into his first glider flight log.

With their decision to build a new airship today’s owners Inge Bachmann and Barbara Majerus demonstrate that they carry on and implement those virtues. They give a strong signal for the future at the company locations in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Cologne.
